The situation of domestic chips has undergone new changes

2024/2/20 17:14:03

In recent days, the situation of domestic chips has undergone new changes.

Firstly, there is a breakthrough in domestic chip manufacturing technology. It should be noted that under the technological blockade in the United States, Huawei's difficulty in independently developing chips can be imagined. Before the Huawei incident, Huawei had already been developing its own HiSilicon chips, but due to TSMC's reluctance to use the 5 nm production line for Huawei, Huawei could only continue to use foreign technology.

However, Huawei has now achieved mass production of 5 nm chips, and TSMC has started supplying 5 nm and 3 nm chips to Huawei, although currently the 7 nm process chips still rely on TSMC's production. But this undoubtedly serves as a wake-up call for domestic enterprises. If they want to avoid being hindered in chip manufacturing, they must develop their own chip technology.

It can be seen that the development situation of domestic chip companies is very severe, and China has always been in a "chip shortage" state in the chip industry, mainly because the gap in chip technology is too large.
Taking mobile phone chips as an example, currently 80% of the chips used in Android smartphones are produced by foreign companies. Due to the relatively late start in chip manufacturing in China, there is a significant gap in research and development capabilities and technology compared to foreign countries. After the Huawei incident, domestic companies have also joined the team of self-developed chips.

For domestic mobile phones, the experience gained in recent years can be used, coupled with the fact that the United States has cut off the supply of Huawei chips, many domestic mobile phone manufacturers have started to increase their research and development efforts, continuously launching better performing phones, which has also given domestic manufacturers more opportunities.

The world's richest man Bill Gates once said, "If we cut off the supply of chips to Chinese companies, it will only force the Chinese market to develop more independently developed chip companies like Huawei.". But will things really develop as expected?
Recently, there have been two news reports in the chip market that the "fig leaf" of domestic chips has been completely torn off.

Firstly, there have been recent media reports that 5746 chip companies in China have been deregistered or revoked in the past year, indicating that almost 15 chip factories disappear every day.
The editor believes that the "decline" of chip companies is also reasonable. Firstly, the research and development costs of chips are quite high, and the initial investment is huge. The impact of the epidemic on various industries is sluggish, and it is understandable that chip companies cannot make ends meet. Secondly, there are also many companies that come from subsidies and do not have the ability to develop chips and maintain them in the long term.

Next is the second news. We can clearly see from the data that last year, the global chip market size was only 573.5 billion US dollars, but China imported 415.6 billion US dollars of chips, which can be said to account for more than half of the global market.
This indicates that although our independently developed chips are on the agenda, their level and requirements still cannot keep up with market demand, and we are still heavily reliant on foreign imports.

Both of these messages strongly tell the fact that the current situation of China's chip industry chain is not as good as imagined, and a large number of domestic manufacturers are still relying on foreign technology and resources, even in half of the world
